  • What to do when Your seatmate is Unruly

April 14, 2014 / travel tips, travel warnings, Uncategorized, women's travel tips

Today a SWAir jet had to stop in Omaha to get a crazed passenger off the plane (he tried to open the read hatch). What can you do if someone near you is difficult, odd or actually talking scary? The answer is not really much. My experience was with a man who refused to let me lower my seat back on an 8 hour flight. He was aggressive towards me and then towards the crew.

The answer is here: first ask crew for help.…

  • Travel Safety Warnings and What to do about Cancelling

April 10, 2014 / The Women's Travel Group, travel insurance for women, travel warnings, women's travel tips

Q: Are Travel Advisories and State Department Warnings Covered?
This information is from TravelInsured our travel insurance company. The question on their newsletter was: does travel insurance cover you if an area is under a State Dept warning or caution. Do note: we do not go to areas under State Dept warnings. Only once did we cancel a trip for 25 going to Egypt; they were all refunded promptly and well before we were paid.

Answer from TravelInsured: No, these types of events are not covered under any travel insurance policy unless you purchase the Optional Cancel For Any Reason.…

Cooking Trip Disasters and Mistakes, burns and spills etc. can happen so avoid them with the following information.

The Women’s Travel Group has returned again from  the most marvelous cooking and sightseeing trip Tuscany to Tuscany which we repeat every year. Each day we cook and eat what we created either for lunch or for dinner. Some items like biscotti are also for snacking. Each afternoon we visit a charming Italian town: Lucca, Siena, Florence, San Gimignano. We also include  chocolate and wine tasting venues. …

  • Festival Trips: What Never to Do!

March 27, 2014 / India travel, italy travel, Pushkar Camel tours, single supplement waiver, singles vacations, solo travel, The Women's Travel Group, tours for women, Uncategorized

This article was written for The Three Tomatoes site with interesting info and events for women in the NY and LA areas. Subscribe for great fun and good information.

If you choose to go on a tour that includes a festival, there are positives and negatives. Positives are you will see local people in their most colorful and joyous. In Pushkar in India, you witness weddings, dances, tribal clothes and jewelry, camel and other races. In Sicily in December, you will join a procession with lighted candles, brass bands and clergy to walk to the Basilica in Palermo.…

  • Preparing for Italy Departure Minus 1 Day

March 26, 2014 / italy travel, The Women's Travel Group, tours for women, Uncategorized, women's travel, women's travel tips

Tomorrow some of our group leaves for Tuscany and our Villa/Cooking trip (the others are meeting a day later). Here is how I organize the day before a big trip:

Eat sensibly adding more salad and yogurt than normal (to balance out junk airplane chow and food impulses at the airport.)
Double check packing list against what was used today and what is actually packed.
Update/refresh all passwords and refile in my secret cave.
Check weather again for both New York  tomorrow and for Pisa.…

  • Travel Safety Clothing: A Big Fraud

March 25, 2014 / India travel, Shopping overseas, singles vacations, solo travel, The Women's Travel Group, women's travel tips

The word, ‘safety’, gets the most attention in travel media. The word, ‘clothing’, gets the most attention in travel media from women readers. So it is all too frequent that article themes are ‘new travel clothing for women’! Today a google alert about women and travel, had another promo about a travel shirt for women. DON’T SPEND YOUR MONEY ON THINGS LIKE THIS.

The best safety tool you have is your common sense and your ability to go on a trip as rested as possible.…

  • Is travel for Octogenarians??

March 24, 2014 / India travel, single supplement waiver, singles vacations, solo travel, The Women's Travel Group, tours for women

Arthur Frommer is back at the helm of his travel book empire which inspired many of us to travel to “Europe on $5 a day”. Yes, I did and (except for inevitable shopping) did Madrid on $5 a day and lodged and ate pretty well.

Frommer, long ‘a friend’ of The Women’s Travel Group and supporter of women travelers, is the owner once again of 340 excellent guides and other travel books. With Pauline, his charming and delightfully smart daughter, Frommer offers books that enhance your experience while being honest about safety, value, and trends.…

  • Tipping and Women's Angst

March 21, 2014 / single supplement waiver, singles vacations, solo travel, women's travel, womens travel clubs

Today in the New Yorker there is a cartoon of two people checking into their hotel room. One says to the other: “How much are we supposed to tip the guy who followed us to our room and flicked on the light switch?”.  Ironically it is the man asking the woman of the couple.

Women angst over tipping: amounts? when? and how? I am not sure why this is, but suffer from it myself. I think somewhere as accomplished and professional as we are, tipping still brings out our insecurity.…

  • Tuscany Cooking Trip: A Week Away Preparations

March 20, 2014 / single supplement waiver, singles vacations, solo travel, women's travel tips

Yes a week away, one can get ready for a trip like our Tuscan Cooking Journey.

Here is my 7 day alert:
Cut down on hard to digest food especially sugary things, so I sleep better and feel fresher for an overnight flight.
Stretch an extra 10 minutes each morning or at least before the end of the day. That helps when you have to sit forever on planes, airport chairs, taxis etc.
Unsubscribe from all new spam to lower the amount of data to paid for overseas.…
