There is a Math 101 to learn and share, if you are women who travel. Specific numbers and letters will find a booking, retrieve ff miles, and send you to the right gate at the airport.
The first number is your ticket number! Your reservation is stored by the airline in two ways. The ticket number is a long list of numbers and upper case letters. It will be in smaller font and on your boarding pass and reservation. It is usually at the bottom left or center, and easy to miss.
The second is a record locator, a short series of numbers and letters. If you want to look at your reservation on line, you need this number. Here is an old record locator for one of my flights: H237U7. The most common error here is mistaking a Zero for an O or vice versa. Try them both before you cry.
Experts advise you keep both ticket number and record locator, until you fly and get your frequent flyer miles. If you are flying on a partner airline and they cannot find your reservation, the ticket number is your salvation. If you flew around the world and did not get your frequent flier miles, the ticket number is your new best friend.
That brings us to another part of travel math. Code Sharing. We are often asked the following sample question? My ticket is on United but my flight is Lufthansa? Code sharing is a marketing arrangement in which airlines book you on another ‘partner’ airline. Code sharing allows airlines to sell more destinations on partner airlines. Here is the tricky part using the example of United/Lufthansa. Your ticket was sold by United. But you will go to the Lufthansa gates at the airport. Your ticket will say “operated by”, that is the law and that is your airline gate. Operated by Lufthansa, go to Lufthansa.
