The Women’s Travel Group loves to eat well overseas. Start your first day on our Paris tour (early bird $300 off until April 1) like this:
A croissant with sweet French butter. Croissants served in Paris are a marvel, better than the best you have eaten in North America. Why? More croissants are consumed in France; so they are fresher and hotter. Ingredients: the croissant is made of 1/4 butter. French butter is higher in fat that its American equivalent. It is fermented to create a smoother buttery taste. Flour is also different, a mixture of hard and softer wheat and importantly: with no additives. French take their breads very seriously. To be called a bakery, goods must be kneaded, shaped and baked on the spot. The word is boulangerie.
Coffee: French breakfast coffee is what we know as espresso. Because it is brewed in a French press without a paper filter, more oils stay in the coffee. Try it but iff you want familiar coffee, ask for American.
There will usually be some sweet rolls. French love various flaky sugary pastries, almond filled ones and others with caramelized sugar coating. Fig and prune jam are popular, next in line is strawberry. You will definitely want to sneak the cute little jars of French jam into your purse to take home. Buy some in any supermarket for wonderful budget gifts also. And of course there will be baguettes, usually sliced.
What else might be in the breakfast? Fruit, juice, and yogurts. Again all will be a bit different possibly tastier both because you are on vacation and because they are better. Juice is the exception; it might be from a container. These days you also find eggs, ham, cheeses, and heavier fare favored by Americans and other Europeans.
If you are going to watch your weight, cheat at breakfast. It is worth it.
