Over 32 years we have had 1,000’s of women travel with The Women’s Travel Group. Our company asks you on a Booking Form if you have special needs. Yes, some needs might be dietary vegetarian? vegan? no red meat? no sugar? only fresh food? Others are physical as in hearing or eyesight issues, colostomy bag issues. (We had a blind guest travel with us; she came with a friend.). A third group are allergies: perfume, peanuts, shellfish even on someone else’s plate and gluten.

Finally are the personal requests. Once my Tuscany room share asked for 10 minutes daily alone in the hotel room to do yoga routine. Of course, I obliged. Another lady could not tolerate down in pillows. Another easy one. A third wanted us to tell her room mate that she wore a wig due to cancer. It is all in a day’s work.

If you have ‘special needs or requests’ ask us if we can accommodate you. Recently we were able to secure a private transfer to Ixtapan for a rollator type walker. It costs a bit more but was an easy ask. And years ago, I roomed with a woman whose addiction included Diet Coke in cans. She packed 12 cans of diet coke to drink in China! When she asked me to help her find it in Hong Kong, the wall came down and I said no.

If you see yourself in one of the above categories, relax.

For diet, globally restaurants are used to vegetarians. Vegans are increasingly common. Beware only uncooked food, can be an issue in some destinations. To avoid any foods, one simply has to list them on the booking form. (Do not tell our escort once you sit down to a welcome dinner in Athens).

Allergies are common. Who has not t been on a flight during which staff announce the avoidance of peanuts for one allergic passenger. Allergic to dust and want to go on a safari? Mask up and deal with it. Perfume? Just tell us. Cigarette smoke? Not allowed on our bus or in a room share and in most hotel rooms

Physical, so you have a colostomy bag, we stop at bathrooms. In a group of women, 99% will join you. Carpe Diem is the bathroom rule. Need to read the guide’s lips? Again ask; you will sit up front.

Finally there was the woman who went to South America with us. She brought her own food for an entire week. At each meal, she counted out xx number of nuts, xx number of dried fruits, xx number  granola bars, a can of tuna, even boxes of milk. The group loved it. We devoured her desserts.
