I am reading a terrific book which explains why Egypt is so fascinating to us as women travelers. At any age in The Women’s Travel Group one wants to visit Egypt. The book is about The Rosetta Stone, carved in 197 BC in Egypt. The stone’s carvings describe a decree is in ancient Greek, in 2 ancient Egyptian scripts, one is hieroglyphics.
Hieroglyphics is a type of writing with images. We know them from Grade School and from ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ type films. And the cartouche charms women buy with their names in Egypt.
Hieroglyphics were a mystery until the discovery of The Rosetta Stone. Victorian code breakers eventually read the pictures allowing ancient Egyptians to talk to us about their daily lives.. Their stories describe royallife, traditions, clothing, food, even local issues like an unpaid debt. You will see many of these stories on our trip in December.
Egypt intrigues us with strange customs: ie, mummies. The New Cairo Museum, overlooking the Pyramids, contains mummies, including a few Ramses with real hair and faces. Throughout Egypt are many mummies even of animals, (Saqqara has an estimated 7 million dog mummies).
Egyptian tombs stun with gold furniture and gold and gem jewelry, masks, toys. Treasures are displayed in the Cairo Museum. Who doesn’t remember the excavation of King Tut who ruled 1330’s BC?
Then there are the Pyramids and Abu Simbel. The Great Pyramid is 40 stories high with 2 million stone blocks lifted without wheels, pulleys, wagons or cranes.
Finally Egypt’s brand is also Cleopatra and Richard/Elizabeth romances, Nefertiti’s head, crocodile temples out of Agatha Christie, obelisks in Central Park, and Paris, The Sphinx, Jewish and Christian history, and Omar Sharif (my favorite).
Quoted from the book,” if Europe were as thick with unknown wonders as Egypt likely is, there would still be Sistine Chapels hidden under sand and mud waiting to be unearthed.
Of all the trips of a lifetime, Egypt is the easiest to do for seniors, and at a fair budget. Hotels are excellent, foo to our liking, and there is little walking if you don’t want to. Here is our trip and we still have some space.
